Dad’s Gone And The Japanese Craziness Has Hit Me

Dear Felicity,

Dad left last week for KL. His eldest brother came to visit him and decided to take over from us. While I miss him, I’m thankful that he’s with someone who can help him recover and “bully” him into eating, going for physio and other stuff. I hope he comes back soon.

Meanwhile, one of my Youth is going away to NS. Because of his background, we fear that he might get into trouble if he’s not careful so we’re praying for him. See, he believes one thing when the country I live in (God bless it) insists he believes another. ‘Nuff said.

Also, I have recently downloaded a whole lot of Japanese broadway from Sakura Wars (8 CDs) and have decided to try to understand what the heck they’re singing about. So I’m learning Japanese indepedently online to understand their grammar and such. Tae Kim’s Japanese grammar guide is wonderful. Give it a try. Also, I highly recommend this online dictionary.

Broadway Bug

Dear Felicity,

I’ve been bitten by the Broadway bug and I’m finding I love musicals. It’s a reminder of my times as a child collecting Disney albums and singing along to Hakuna Matata and the like. Turns out Disney is reviving some of their old stuff into musicals, the latest being “The Little Mermaid”. I love Ursula’s extra songs. You can check them out on youtube¬†here for the first song and just follow on through from there.

Wouldn’t it be great to produce Crossway musicals? Maybe it can happen one day. ūüėÄ

Don’t Rain On My Parade (Sam’s Version)

Considering what I’m going through, my theme for this month is this, albeit modified:

Don’t tell me not to live, just sit and putter
Life’s candy and the sun’s a ball of butter
Don’t bring around a cloud to rain on my parade
Don’t tell me not to fly, I’ve simply got to
If someone takes a spill, it’s me and not YOU!
Who told you you’re allowed to rain on my parade?

I’ll march my band out
I’ll beat my drum
And if I’m fanned out
Your turn at bat, sir
At least I didn’t fake it, hat, sir
So what if I don’t make it!

But whether I’m the rose of sheer perfection
A freckle on the nose of life’s complexion
The cinder or the shiny apple of it’s eye
I gotta fly once
I gotta try once
You only die once, right, sir?
Ooh, life is juicy
Juicy and you’ll see
I’m gonna get my bite, sir
Get ready for me, world, ’cause I’m a comer
I’ve simply gotta march, my love’s the drummer
Don’t bring around a cloud to rain on my parade

I’m gonna live and live now
Get what is mine, I know how
One roll for the whole shebang
One throw, that bell will go clang
Eye on the target and wham!
One shot, one gunshot and BAM!
Hey, watch out, people, here I am

I’ll march my band out
I’ll beat my drum
And if I’m fanned out
Your turn at bat, sir
At least I didn’t fake it, hat, sir
So what if I don’t make it
Get ready for me, world, ’cause I’m a comer
I’ve simply gotta march, my love’s the drummer
Nobody, no, nobody is ever gonna rain on my parade…

Take that, challenges!!!

A Whole New Chapter In My Life

Dear Felicity,

It’s been a while since my last update so here’s what’s happening:

a) I know I’m late to jump on the Disney Mania bandwagon but I’ve been a fan of Disney since I was a little kid. I remember having karaoke sessions with my brother and friends and we would sing to the soundtracks of the Disney Renaissance (from Little Mermaid – Tarzan) for hours. My brother would take the cool characters, my friend would take the heroes he related to and yours truly would do the others from the ladies to weird characters to my personal faves, the VILLAINS. ~BE PREPARED~ BWAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

Anyway Disney Mania remixes some of the old songs. Some are fantastic, some are commercialized fare and some I collect for plain wierdness – Poor Unfortunate Souls Rock Remix by Jonas Brothers?! Go figure.

b) Liz, my younger “sister” is WORKING!!! At my old workplace CANON CONCEPT STORE!!! Which is UNDER BETTER MANAGEMENT!!! And she who didn’t get past PMR is saving up for COLLEGE!!!! I was doing flips in my bedroom when I heard.

c) The reason why it’s a new chapter for me. I’m 26 this past Nov 8. No girlfriend but I’m confirmed at work so things are looking up. I still want to settle down sometime but when exactly is up to the Lord. I also know I should work on the packaging this wonderful heart is in and lose weight but getting to it is another whole chore. I’m making a recommitment to my emotional and spiritual growth and trying to get my family to pray together more often. Time will tell how I will mature as a person and as a leader of young people.

Dear God, thanks for another great year. Help me to get past the things that keep me down from flying high with You and help me to truly be a blessing wherever I am.

WHOO-HOO!!

P.S. Thanks to everyone who made my 4 day birthday weekend memorable, especially my parents and the McIsaac family.

Microsoft Office vs. Photoshop

I’ve been asked to produce a simple document where certain rows are dual-column while others are single-column as they are headers. Easy, non?

Wrong!!!

I have been wrestling for a complete hour in trying various alternatives to getting it right on Microsoft office and it STILL doesn’t work. God, I miss using Photoshop! (And that’s a prayer, people!)

To quote:

“Photoshop is that young vibrant design exec that can do yoga while feeding your baby and tutoring your kid in algebra. Microsoft Office programs are middle-aged executives with back problems.”

As comes with time…

…things get left behind. The previous two posts show my current growing up. But deep down inside, I feel a bit like Wayne Kirkpatrick when he wrote this song for Susan Ashton:

Innocence Lost

Gone away, the days of wish and wondering
Far away, like a vision in my mind
The child has grown and left me here alone
Looking back to what was left behind.

Lullabyes and pennies in a wishing well
Sad goodbyes to friends of make believe
A love so pure, a treasure
Now buried in the sea of me.

Milton lost his paradise, Dorothy lost her way
Vincent lost his sanity, Thomas lost his faith
Hoover lost the second time, Sigmund lost his friend
Me, I lost my innocence and I want it back again.

A tug-of-war is going on inside of me
A calloused heart that wants to make a change
While time prevails fighting tooth and nail
Keeping me set in my ways

Marco found the orient, Gepetto found his boy
Lincoln found a unity that Lee could not destroy
Lindy found the other side, Gershwin found the stage
Me, I found a stubborness that seems to grow with age

As I dream of where I’ll go, may I learn from where I’ve gone
And take the memories that I hold into tomorrow

Milton lost his paradise, Dorothy lost her way
Vincent lost his sanity, Thomas lost his faith
Hoover lost the second time, Sigmund lost his friend
Me, I lost my innocence and I want it back again.
I had it once before and I want it back again…

MY CNY Purchases

Well, as with all of us, when we get ang paus, we decide to treat ourself to a little something.

Here’s what I got:

1.

   Mousetrap & Others

Agatha’s Christie’s The Mousetrap and Other Plays collection. 8 of her finest plays in one volume, all for only RM19.90! SQUEEEE!!!!!!

2.

    Brave NN

Nichole Nordeman’s latest album: Brave!

A talented lyricist/singer that took a break for two years, she’s back with more works of art. Among my favorites are:

“Brave” – A song inspired by her own motherhood that (to quote) “rearranged her own heart” and made her brave through the chaos that babies bring into life.

“What If?” – Questions for the skeptics.

“Real To Me” – Who cares about theology and philosophy? Being real to me is all I’m asking, Lord. I especially like: “All the scribes and all the scholars, No winners in this debate, Everybody seems to stand up taller, When You’re easy to explain.” and usually this is true: “All the questions from my head, Are from my heart instead.”

“Live” – Why do we get re-energized only to slip into apathy? Let’s ask for God to help us to truly live.

As you can tell, I love her not just for her lilting, country alto voice but the fact that God made her a master sculptor of words to music.

3.

    Falling Up Crashings

Falling Up’s first album, Crashings. A young pash rock band ala Linkin Park style that believes in Jesus and His grace.

I was drawn to this album by two of their singles “Broken Heart” and “Escalates”.

Now, as I listen to it, I love the creativity involved but I wish I could understand it more. The lyrics are more like thoughts flowing to paper rather than cohesive structure. I would like to learn to decipher and appreciate this form of art. Who knows? Maybe I will one day. Maybe I’ll keep it aside for another time.

Chrono Continuum and Stocks

Yesterday was a day to remember. Yesterday was a day where I walked home smelling that sweet taste of victory. Yesterday was the day where I and Kevin single-handedly did an inventory check in HALF A DAY!!!! Despite the obstacles we faced with Gurney's ruling that we must open at 2, the customers that trickled in like ants to sugar to keep us both occupied and the insane figures the computer spewed out to confuse frustrate us (34.65 Magenta Catridges??? 2.5 IP1200 Inkjet Printers???), we both managed to account for the whole store's stocks in JUST 5 HOURS!!! Somebody give us a medal!!

Now for the next painful bit, the report…. Oy….

Also, during my leisure time, I have made a vow to get the perfect ending for that age-old RPG Classic Chrono Cross once and for all. That means playing the game at least three times through to explore all the choices and get all the characters.

What makes this game so great despite it being an old PSX game? The music is enchanting, the graphics are excellently done and the battle system is uniquely fun. It's also the only game where you get to control 42 different characters in a turn-based RPG without any strategy large-scale wars. Add that to the fact that Squaresoft takes the time to develop each character to give them all a personality, an accent and a bit of a back story (some more than others, hey, it's Chrono Cross, not Lord Of The Rings) and anyone would want to sample this classic wonder.

So what's it about?

Serge, a simple country boy in a fishing village, with the perfect idyllic life, suddenly finds himself in a different world where he's supposed to have died. With the help of a renegade thief, he finds that his world has been split in twain where one choice has its alternative lived out in another dimension. Now a mysterious figure, Lynx, searches for him to gain the power to change fate itself…
